As a Washington DC wedding planner I often get asked: What is the first thing we should do before looking at venues or vendors?
My answer is always the same: start your guest list!
Your guest list serves as the foundation for all your wedding planning decisions. Start by determining your “rule” for inviting someone with a plus-one—this could be based on factors like whether the guest is in a serious relationship or if they’re traveling a significant distance to attend. Once you’ve established your criteria, begin listing names in an organized Excel spreadsheet. Create columns for essential details such as full names, contact information, relationship to the couple, RSVP status, dietary preferences, and plus-one names. This spreadsheet will not only help you track your guest count but also streamline communication and planning tasks like sending invitations, organizing seating arrangements, and coordinating meal options with your caterer. A well-maintained guest list ensures you stay on top of every detail, reducing stress and making the entire planning process much smoother.
